Swedish Massage
Our instinctive reaction to pain, sorrow, or discomfort, both in ourselves are those around us, has always been touch. How many times do `rub it better’ when dealing with bumps, or aches and pains, or give a comforting hug to someone who is upset, or hold the hand of someone going through a crisis? Touch is possibly the oldest form of healing and from such a naturally simple act many powerful healing disciplines have been developed, such as shiatsu, chiropractic, osteopathy, reflexology, and of course massage.
What is massage?
An excellent way to relieve pain, stimulate blood flow, regenerate muscle tissue, tone and relax the body, this is one of the oldest, simplest forms of therapy. Much more that just a pleasant stroking of the skin, massage also works on the soft tissues (muscles, ligaments, and tendons) to improve muscle tone. Although it largely affects muscles just under the skin, its benefits also reach the deeper layers of muscle and possibly the organs themselves. Massage also stimulates blood circulation and assists the lymphatic system, improving the elimination of waste and toxins from the body.
Why massage?
There are many different reasons to seek massage therapy, such as:
· stress-related problems and disorders
· muscle pain or discomfort, headaches, stiffness
· as part of an exercise or weight reduction programme
· as a complimentary therapy related to another treatment process
· a lovely way to treat yourself and have time to unwind
The effects of massage
Although a single massage is enjoyable, the effects of massage are cumulative and a course of treatments can have the effect of strengthening and toning the entire body mechanism, and so to help prevent unnecessary injuries and sprains that could otherwise occur due to excess tension and stress on the body. Depending upon what the individual needs, massage can calm or stimulate the nervous system and so help reduce fatigue and leave the receiver with a feeling of replenished energy. At its best, massage has the potential to restore the individual mentally, physically, and spiritually.
