What is aromatherapy?
Essential oils can be used to treat emotional imbalances, disturbances of the mind, and all systems of the body. There are many ways to use essential oils but massage is by far the most effective way of getting the oils into the body and also increases the healing potential of the aromatherapy treatment. The combination of the nurturing power of touch along with the healing properties of the oils form a potent healing treatment. Massage can boost the lymphatic systems which will in turn improve physical and mental functions and it can also soothe the nervous system. It also has the added benefit of easing pain and tension from overworked or overstretched muscles and lifts the spirit.
A brief history
The therapeutic benefits of aromatic plant oils has been valued by most ancient cultures. Historic Chinese medical texts and the ancient Vedic literature of India document the importance of scented oils in promoting spirituality and health. Roman soldiers were strengthened by scented baths and regular massage, whilst the `father of medicine’, Hippocrates, used fragrant fumigations to help rid Athens of the plague. The richest aromatic traditions however, belonged to the ancient Egyptians. Physicians travelled from all over the world to learn aromatic medicine from these Egyptian masters.
Who can benefit from aromatherapy?
People of all levels of health and of all ages, from the very young to the elderly, can benefit from aromatherapy. Pregnant women and even seriously ill patients can benefit from treatment but only under the guidance of a qualified aromatherapy practitioner.
What does aromatherapy treat?
Aromatherapy is good for many complaints and illnesses but has shown to be particularly good for stress related problems, rheumatic and muscular pain, menstrual and menopausal complaints, mental illnesses, digestive problems, insomnia, anxiety, and depression.
